It’s 7:15 a.m., and I’m rolling out of bed, wondering what the day ahead might bring. Instantly my mind wanders in fifteen different directions trying to guess how my day will play out. This is the part of my morning routine I enjoy, because most of the time my day takes a completely different direction, but it’s always fun to guess.
If you work at a communications agency, you know exactly what I’m talking about. The “average” day is really never the same, so trying to explain to someone what a typical day is like can be quite the challenge.
However, there are a few day-to-day happenings at AKHIA that I’ve come to love, such as the never-ending supply of coffee, morning announcements and funny all-agency emails. I’m happy to say there is never a dull day at the office, so I’m going to share what are the building blocks of a typical day here at AKHIA.
Meetings – Whether an internal status regroup or a formal client meeting, it’s not often we go a day without at least one or two meetings. Meeting with team members and clients is an essential ingredient in agency life to keep projects moving forward. It’s in the best interest of everyone on the team to check in with one another and keep in constant communication to be efficient and strategic.
Emails – It’s safe to say emails are part of most office jobs, not just an agency. Sometimes email can be more efficient for communication when team members or clients cannot physically be in the room for a meeting or phone call. So if you don’t already check your email every hour of every day, it’s time to start getting used to it!
Workflow – This is a constant, everyday occurrence. Whether it’s writing a creative brief, routing client revisions or regrouping with the team to ensure everyone is on track, the workflow never stops. With so many clients and projects moving at once, it is important to have a process of checks and balances to ensure we’re doing everything we can to prevent errors and create the greatest quality of work for our clients.
Hard Work – There isn’t a day that goes by when I’m not challenged to think strategically, service my clients in the best way possible and run fast without missing a step. Agency life is hard work, but it also reaps great rewards—although we work hard every day, we celebrate our success and a job well done.
Jan Sessions – About once a month the agency gathers together for a Jan session, which is led by our president, Jan Gusich. Jan takes this time to discuss recent agency news, such as successful projects/campaigns and new team members. This is also a time when account teams are recognized for their hard work on a project.
As I said before, no day is ever going to be the same, but there are definitely elements of the day you’ll become familiar with. Working at an agency is unpredictable, and I think that is one of the reasons I love my job!
