If you’ve dined with me, then you know I can be a bit indecisive about my meal and beverage options. In fact, there’s been a funny meme circulating that comes to mind for this sort of behavior. That’s why I love visiting a dining spot to discover they’ve already made the decision for me: Behold, a menu of prepared scrumptious food and drink pairings!

Rather than poring over the drink menu for so long that my server has stopped back three times to grab my drink order, followed by debating which meal will best complement my poky beverage choice, an ideal combo has already been cleverly organized for me. (Plus, there’s nothing worse than mixing a glass of full-bodied red wine with a plate of seared scallops – been there, done that, will never do it again.)

Along the same premise, sometimes you just need a recommendation for some good new harmonizing reads and tunes to check out. That’s why I’ve already gone to the trouble of preparing a menu of reading and audible options for you.

Here’s a look at a few of my current favorite blog and musical pairings (in no particular order):

ReFashionista – This girl is my hero. The refashionista herself, Jillian Owens, combines two of my favorite pastimes: shopping (namely thrifting) and style. Self-defined as a “writer, designer and eco-fashion revolutionary,” Jillian manages to transform the often hideous and oversized garments she finds for no more than $1 at her local thrift shop into glamorous getups. You’ve got to see the before and after shots for yourself to believe them (wait, she made gauchos into what?!). And, you may have even caught her recently refashioning apparel on “Good Morning America.”

Jillian has definitely inspired me – I’m now on a thrifting/flea marketing mission to find a sewing machine to turn my own garb into glitz. It’s only appropriate that the complementary music choice should be an upbeat tune to get the creative juices flowing.

Seth’s Blog – A blog post a day keeps writer’s block away. Or, at least that’s what I like to think Seth’s personal mantra might be. Seth is a consistent blogger with a consistent voice – and it’s consistently genius. When I read his posts, I feel like I’m stepping into the brain of Seth Godin himself and sneaking an inside peek at his inner thought processes and miscellaneous ramblings (perhaps like in “Being John Malkovich” without the crazy monkey and puppeteering). The greatest takeaway for me is his succinct, simplistic writing style and his unique form of persuasion and motivation that shines through in each post. His blog has a sort of hometown coffee shop vibe, so it’s only fitting that the music pairing would suit that environment with an artsy, insightful tune.

Thought Catalog – It’s no secret that TC is one of my ultimate guilty pleasures. Filled with oodles of listicles (“7 Small Ways to Make Big Changes,” “10 Listicles I Wish Someone Would Write,” and so on), advice and confessions from 20- and 30-somethings, each post has a way of pulling at my inner heartstrings. As a compilation of articles from a variety of authors and contributors, TC has a little something to satisfy every imagination. Of course, the ideal musical pairing is one that offers a crafty mishmash of artists as well.

The Oatmeal – While creator Matt Inman pens a blog, what I enjoy most are his comics. Coming from a background of marketing and graphic design, Matt seems to have a natural affinity for quirky creativity that shines through in his playful pokes at pop culture and goofy caricatures. If you need a good chuckle, check out his posts on “Every Campfire, Ever,” “6 Reasons Bacon is Better than True Love” and “How to Tell if Your Cat is Plotting to Kill You.” Others like “Ten Words You Need to Stop Misspelling” and “How to Use a Semicolon” are humorous with an educational twist, highlighting Matt’s ultimate grammar pet peeves. It only makes sense that the music selection for The Oatmeal is as uncanny as the site itself.
